When investigating the Halal status of flavoring extracts, the solvent used to carry the flavor is the most critical factor. In the case of Pure Orange Extract, the composition is typically a solution of alcohol (80%), tincture of orange peel, water, and oil of orange.

The main flag here is the alcohol. In the flavor industry, high-proof alcohol is the standard solvent used to extract essential oils and flavor compounds from plant materials, such as orange peels. This process creates a tincture of orange peel. Because the alcohol is integral to the product's creation and constitutes the vast majority of its volume, the final product is considered non-Halal. Even if the alcohol is synthetic rather than fermented, the ruling on intoxicants applies.

While water and oil of orange are perfectly Halal, they cannot outweigh the presence of the alcohol. Unlike vanilla extract, where some scholars allow the use after the alcohol has cooked off, the high concentration (80%) in orange extract makes it a distinct concern. Therefore, strictly speaking, this product should be avoided by those adhering to a Halal diet.

Nutritional Value

Pure Orange Extract is used in very small quantities, so it contributes negligible nutritional value to your diet. A typical serving size is less than a teaspoon. It contains no significant carbohydrates, protein, or fat. The calories are essentially zero per serving.

However, because it is almost entirely alcohol by volume, it does contain 'empty calories' from the alcohol itself if consumed in large (and unsafe) amounts. From a purely nutritional standpoint, it is not a source of vitamins or minerals found in whole oranges. It is strictly a flavoring agent.
